When we bought our home last summer, the very first project we took on was painting the main floor living area. Our space is long and narrow with windows only on one side, so I picked a Behr Ultra Pure White from Home Depot. It instantly brightened things up.
We knew that the kitchen was the next project that we wanted to tackle. The cabinets were an orangey stained wood color when we moved in and there was an unnecessary little wall separating the kitchen from the rest of the living space.
We started by hiring a painter to paint our kitchen cabinets white. This was no small job; it took him three full days and he’s a pro! It required removing the doors one by one each day and a lot of detail work. Having the cabinets painted white made a dramatic difference in the space. I ordered new pulls from myknobs.com (not what it sounds like, ha) so we replaced all the kitchen hardware after the cabinets were painted. Our faucet happened to break around this time, so it was the perfect excuse to go for a new matte black one.
A few months later, we hired a contractor to take down the wall that separated our kitchen from the living/dining area and to put in a new tile backsplash. After this work was complete, the kitchen finally felt like an extension of the living area instead of its own separate space.
Besides painting the living room, we furnished it, hung our gallery wall, and brought home our trusty (read: extremely finicky) fiddle leaf fig tree. Our sectional that we had ordered on the day we closed on our place – because we were just too excited to wait until we moved in – came soon after we finished painting.
